Nose is soaring dark toffee and caramel with a lovely tea leaf hint. Luscious and aged. Dark olives, moreish and with persistent flavours of toffee, chocolate and dried dates layered and deep with licorice and cinnamon spice, lovely very long finish, absolutely outstanding wine.

Hardys, Limited Cellar Release, Rare Muscat, Australia NV

The production of premium Muscats has been a huge focus for Hardy’s ever since their first vintage in 1853 and there’s no doubt that this regional winner will instantly develop a loyal following among fans of fortified wines.

It is, however, Hardy’s intention that consumers new to wine develop an appreciation for highly matured flavours at the richer end of the spectrum through an understanding of the time and effort required to produce wines of this quality and age.

Their limited cellar release is the perfect example of a Rare Australian Muscat. It is a blend of several base wines from various vintages with an average age of 20 years.  The oldest vintage in the blend is from 1969 and it lends a deep, mellow quality; the younger bases bring vibrancy and freshness.

This wine was born after Hardy’s head winemaker realised the potential of the vast amount of premium reserves in their fortified cellars and set about selecting the most luscious and intense of these wines to craft a Rare Muscat.  His skilful blending and judicious freshening with younger wines has brought about a truly magnificent wine of great richness which delivers huge concentration of flavour mingled with wonderfully complex layers of spice that have evolved from extended maturation in old fortified barrels.

This wine is also a blend of Muscats, a key variety being the brown Muscat which is critical to the structure of the wine.  The company aims to produce approximately 1000 bottles each year.  Restricting annual production ensures freshness and enables Hardy’s to maintain style and, more importantly, the average age across the blend.

This regional winner is a solid addition to an already highly decorated portfolio and reinforces Hardy’s drive to be the world’s leading provider of New World premium, commercial and value wines.
