The winner of this year's Decanter Reader Award for Best National Merchant, as voted for by Decanter readers went to Majestic.
We thought it was pretty remarkable when Majestic won this Award for the fourth consecutive time in 2011; well, it’s done it again. The multiple retailer won by a nose over The Wine Society, inspiring such comments as: ‘Carries a comprehensive range of the world’s goodquality and attractively priced wines, not being afraid to go out on a limb if the quality justifies it. Efficient and charming service from bottom to top.’ Another comment: ‘The name of the company says it all: head and shoulders above the rest with a superb team of highly trained and interested, committed staff.’ It won plaudits not just for its expertise, charm and service but also for competitive pricing and regular discounts – ‘important during times of recession’, as one reader pointed out. It has a total of 193 stores across the country and offers free delivery locally for all orders of six bottles or more; in addition, all but three stores have free parking. Each store has a tasting counter, with opened bottles ready for sampling, and the fine wine section has now been rolled out to include most stores. ‘Friendly and flexible,’ concluded one reader.
