Waitrose out in front in DWWA medal table

Upmarket supermarket Waitrose has won an easy victory in the battle of the UK retailers at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

More than 400 of the wines it stocks won a medal – almost twice as many as the next most awarded retailer, Majestic.

Waitrose was Decanter’s Supermarket of the Year 2010 and 2009. While it has taken top spot when it comes to the sheer quantity of medal-winning wines stocked, it will have to wait until September to see if it can take the top supermarket spot for the third year in a row.

Mail order specialist Laithwaites took third spot with 196 wines; Tesco and Asda were some distance back with 137 and 125 medal winning wines stocked in store.
