DWWA 2014 Regional Trophy: Australian Red Bordeaux Varietal under £15

This year's Decanter World Wine Awards Regional Trophy for Australian Red Bordeaux Varietal under £15 went to Kilikanoon, Killerman's Run Cabernet Sauvignon, Clare Valley, South Australia 2012 (14%)

Tasted against:

  • No other Golds in this category

Profile:

This is one of two Regional Trophies Kilikanoon has bagged this year. The intriguingly named Killerman’s Run range takes its name from Mr Killerman, a character who lived alone in the bush near the winery, growing his own produce (including grapes for his own wine), and catching rabbits and shooting kangaroos for meat.

This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon expression of the land on which Mr Killerman roamed, according to founder and chief winemaker Kevin Mitchell: ‘The wine represents a number of things, but mostly it’s about varietal expression and the relationship the variety has with its unique terroir. Clare is a wonderful place to grow and make Cabernet. Its elevation, its unique topography, climate and ancient soils all contribute and are central to the wine’s identity, along with its textural qualities and ability to age for a long time.

‘Long celebrated as Australia’s premier home of Riesling, the characters of the Clare Valley region that have served that variety so well for many years also provide the foundation for Cabernet Sauvignon to flourish. 2012 was a brilliant year for reds in the Clare Valley.’
