1988 vintage guide for Germany

drink soon

Classic wines with excellent structure and complexity

Weather Conditions

From April to the end of September the weather was perfect. Some rain in the first and the third weekends in October caused the very ripe grapes to absorb a lot of water, but the cool, dry, windy weather which followed through November allowed botrytis to spread and as a result, superb Spatleses, Ausleses, Beerenausleses and Trockenbeerenausleses were possible.

Best Appellations

The second very fine vintage of the ‘eighties and the first of the series of great vintages (with the exception of 1991) right up to 1999. Many Rieslings from the Middle Mosel, Nahe and Pfalz, and also other varieties from Franken and Baden, were outstanding in this underrated vintage. Many of the wines are at their peak now and some will last for many years.

Best Producers

In the Mosel, J.J. Prum and Frtz Haag produced a great range of wines as did Paul Anheuser in Nahe. A superb Eiswein year.
