1979 vintage guide for Red Rhone

drink soon

Weather excellent throughout the summer especially in the south, but crop was large. Hermitage was the star

Weather Conditions

In the north, the spring was mild, and flowering earlier than usual. The summer was hot and dry. Picking began in late September in excellent conditions. In the south, the weather was excellent throughout the summer.

Best Appellations

Hermitage produced the best wines, and the other northern appellations produced sound if slightly light wines. The best whites also came from Hermitage. In the south, the crop was large and some wines lack concentration, although the best proved long-lived and powerful. (Condrieu was delicious in its youth but did not keep well)
