1983 vintage guide for Red Rhone

drink now

The best reds from Hermitage and Cote Rotie combined wonderfully rich fruit with a powerful tannic structure, and are proving very long-lived

Weather Conditions

June was quite wet in the northern Rhône, but the months that followed were warm and dry, culminating in a harvest during ideal climatic conditions. Dry weather in the south.

Best Appellations

North: the best reds from Hermitage and Côte Rotie combined wonderfully rich fruit with a powerful tannic structure, and are proving very long-lived. This is the best vintage since 1978. White Hermitage was fresher than in 1982. South: the wines proved erratic. Some were rich and bold, others pallid and simple. (Condrieu did not last the course.)

Best Producers

Wines such as Jaboulet’s Crozes Thalabert are still very much alive.
