Pomerol's La Pointe for sale
June 8, 2007

Jane Anson in Bordeaux

Chateau La Pointe, the largest Pomerol estate to go on the open market for years, is currently up for sale for around €32m.

The 25ha estate, owned by Stéphane d'Arfeuille, covers 3% of the entire hectarage of Pomerol. It has 21.5ha under vine and also has 3.5ha of private garden, the biggest park in the appellation.

There has been interest in the estate from both institutional and private buyers, including a high profile Medoc proprietor and a Mexican politician. Despite having been unofficially on the market for six months, no deals have yet been signed.

A well-placed Bordeaux insider told decanter.com there have been three potential buyers who have come very close to signing, 'but so far each one has fallen through.' The price started at €40m and is now around €32m.

The estate is planted to 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc, and although its sandy terroir isn't Pomerol's best, it's a popular wine with consumers, if not always with critics. The fifth largest estate of the appellation, La Pointe produces an average of 120,000 bottles (10,000 cases) per year.

The last big Pomerol estate sold was the 34ha Chateau Nenin, sold to the Delon family in 1997.
