Writer says Champagne every morning is secret to long life
August 11, 2008
By Oliver Styles
UK crime writer John Mortimer says a glass of Champagne every morning is the secret to a long life.
The 85-year-old novelist, whose most celebrated creation, Horace Rumpole, used to drink 'Chateau Thames Embankment' red wine at his local wine bar, revealed his drinking habits to UK broadsheet The Guardian at the weekend.
As part of the newspaper's What I See in the Mirror series, Mortimer wrote about his old age. He said that being in wheelchair got him 'into aeropanes ahead of everybody' and that he had 'gone off' food.
'I don't want false teeth,' he said. 'I've enough teeth to go on with, as I've gone off food. I don't really like the taste of it in my mouth.'
The writer added that he was meant to take high-protein drinks throughout the day but that he distrusted doctors, saying each one told him something different.
'So I stick to Champagne – not very grand Champagne,' he said. 'I drink it every morning, and that is the secret of a long life.'
One small glass of 12% abv wine constitutes half of the UK government's daily limit for sensbile drinking.

I was pleased to hear of your story of a well educated man...John Mortimer...drinking responsibly and enjoying himself.
It is a refreshing story when one hears of the French treating wine marketing alongside pornography and the Scottish attempting some form of prohibition. Enjoy your fizz Mr Mortimer.

Bravo Mr Mortimer! I can't think of anything I would rather have for breakfast and I myself am being forced away from food (but I love food) whilst allergies are being investigating.. so let's drink fizz! Hurrah..

In Thailand wine tax is about 400 percent! But that didn't stop those from enjoying wine. Most Thais love red wine for health reasons. I gave my father Champagne and sparkling wines until he could no longer drink. He died at 92! And that was because of lung cancer. He was enjoying a glass or two of red wine, Champagne and sparkling wine every day since his 75th birthday.

Michael Caine when asked if he could see any advantages in old age replied that 'At least it proved that one was still alive' - I'm told he appreciates champagne as well!

Dear Mr. Mortimer,
M.me Lilly Bollinger said: I drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty. I totally do agree
