Decanter puts the best of Veneto on show

February 27, 2009
By Maggie Rosen

Decanter is hosting the most comprehensive tasting of Veneto wines to take place in London in many years.

On 10 March, visitors will have a chance to taste over 200 wines from nearly 40 producers, spanning the entire region.

In addition to the Verona classics of Bardolino, Soave and Valpolicella, the line-up includes two Gambero Rosso 2009 Tre Bicchieri winners from the less-known region of Padua - Erno Capodilista and Ca' Lustra, both of which give a local flavour to wine from international varietals.

Visitors will have a chance to sample an unprecedented range of whites from the eastern part of the Veneto, including the structured wines of Lugana and more aromatic examples of Custoza.

  • 'The Veneto is possibly the most diverse wine region in Italy,' said Luciano Piona, president of the Unione Vini Veneti, and owner of Cavalchina, in Custoza.

'This tasting will give people a chance to discover a "full wine list" from sparkling to sweet – from Prosecco to Amarone and everything in between.'

In addition to Prosecco from such producers as Bisol, there will be a full complement of sparkling wines including examples from the new DOC Lessini Durello (near Soave) and Gambellara (a rare DOC in Vicenza).

'Perhaps the most interesting aspect will be the opportunity to talk to small producers who love their jobs and get the best out of their terroir, including some whose wines are not yet present in the UK.'

Decanter's Wines of the Veneto Tasting day takes place at London's Institute of Directors on 10 March. The trade are welcome from 10.30-16.30, while consumers are invited from 18.00-21.00. For further information and tickets, please see www.decanter.com/events or call +44 203 148 4513.
