Top Constellation winemaker resigns

April 27, 2009
By Chris Snow in Adelaide

Rob Bowen, Constellation Wines Australia's top executive in Western Australia has resigned.

Bowen, senior winemaker and regional manager in WA, is in charge of the company's Houghton, Brookland Valley, Amberley and Goundrey operations and has been with the company for six years.

His resignation takes effect on 5 June.

'I'm looking for new challenges,' Bowen said. 'Whether it be in Portugal or Argentina or Spain or anywhere, I'd like to find something exciting.'

He would not comment on whether his departure had anything to do with the 350 redundancies announced last June following a review of operations.

Most of the redundancies were expected to be among staff at the three wineries and 20 vineyards earmarked for sale and at bottling facilities that were consolidated.

Under his leadership, the wineries have won hundreds of medals and many trophies at Australian wine shows.

He had previously spent five years at Willow Bridge, nine years at Capel Vale and nine years at Plantagenet, all in WA. He also established, as a consultant, New Zealand's Palliser Estate.

Constellation Wines Australia did not return calls about Bowen's departure.
