Shop opens in Dubai airport selling some of the world's rarest wines

July 21, 2009
Le Clos By Lucy Shaw

A fine wine and spirits shop has opened in Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 selling some of the rarest wines in the world, duty free.

Le Clos boasts some of the world's most sought after wines, including Château Petrus 1947 ($12,500/bottle), Château Cheval Blanc 1961 in magnum ($15,750) and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2005 ($27,778/bottle).

The shop also stocks a number of New World wines, including vintages from Napa icons Opus One, Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle.

Retail outlets of Le Clos have opened in the First Class Lounge and on the shopping concourse in Terminal 3 – the largest airport terminal in the world.

The shop lists over 400 wines, with France, Italy and the US heavily represented. South Africa, Spain, Australia, Chile and New Zealand make up the rest of the collection, alongside high-end spirits such as 40-year-old single malts.

One of the quirkier items for sale is a $125K Dom Perignon guitar case.

The store is run by Maritime and Mercantile International (MMI), a subsidiary of The Emirates Group.

I have visited this shop at the end of June and must say that I found it heavily overpriced. Whereas one may tolerated this for older vintages and rare bottlings, in particular the newer vintages of Claret sold were much mre expensive than the tax-burdened offerings in my home town. Conclusion: Nice to look at, but I will never buy there...

Austria produce many fine wines...yet apparently none of this fine nectar is made available at Le Close wine shop in Dubai International Airport.

Was Austrian wine ever considered for their prestigious wine list?

Am sure many of the wine enthusiasts like myself would love to have the choice of quality Austrian wines while shopping through the Dubai Airport.

...and what about The Profet and his message: thou shall not drink (wine)???

Odd place to open this shop...
