New MWs announced

September 7, 2009
By Rebecca Gibb

Eight new Masters of Wine have just been created in the annual announcement of the results of the MW exams.

The successful students are all based in Europe and come from diverse sectors of the wine industry including distribution, education, journalism, and restaurant management.

Decanter contributor Susie Barrie MW told decanter.com, 'Becoming an MW has been the greatest personal challenge I have faced in my life so far. But it's been worth every second. It was only made possible thanks to the generous help and support of family, friends and colleagues'.

Barrie's husband, wine writer Peter Richards, also passed the rigorous exams leaving him with just the dissertation to complete before they are both Masters of Wine - the third married couple to become MWs following in the footsteps of David Peppercorn and Serena Sutcliffe, and Philippa and Peter Carr.

There are now 280 MWs in the world.

The new Masters of Wine are:
  • Susie Barrie MW, a freelance journalist, author, television and radio presenter from Winchester, UK;

  • Michael Collier MW, a wine consultant based in Surrey, UK;
  • Roman Horvath MW , managing director of Domäne Wachau, Austria;
  • Isabelle Legeron MW, a French-born educator, event organiser and television broadcaster, living in London, UK;
  • Tim Marson MW, a wine buyer for Bibendum in London, UK;
  • Tuomas Meriluoto MW, managing director of WineState, an importer in Finland;
  • Frank Roeder MW, founder and chief executive of VIT, a wine distribution company based in Saar, Germany;
  • Mai Tjemsland MW, owner of GastroConsult, a restaurant, catering and wine club group in Oslo, Norway.
