Banker splashes out on Champagne – literally

August 18, 2005
By Oliver Styles

It's the kind of clichéd celebration generally reserved for victorious sportsmen but spraying Champagne has apparently become the new yuppie sport.

An investment banker who spent over £21,000 on top Champagnes in a London club has also had to foot the clean-up bill of £15,000 after spraying the contents of the bottles around the room he hired.

The unnamed banker, who is based in Monaco, invited some friends to Soho's exclusive Mo*Vida private members club for a party.

He ordered 49 bottles and six magnums of Louis Roederer Cristal, 13 bottles and two magnums of Dom Pérignon as well as two bottles of Cristal Rosé. The contents of each bottle ended up on the floors, chairs and walls of the private VIP room hired by the banker. It is not known how much of the Champagne was actually drunk.

The total bill, including wines, service charge and cleaning came to £41,728.

'It might seem a tremendous waste, but if someone is willing to pay the bill for any damage they are free to do what they want,' said a spokesman for the newly-opened London club.

'This kind of thing happens on a regular basis,' a source at Mo*Vida told decanter.com.
