Reality TV moves to wine
September 14, 2005

Oliver Styles, and agencies

Move over Big Brother, the wine world is about to get its own reality TV show.

The Wine Makers is a new six-part US television series which sees five people set out to make their own wine.

The programme is set to be shot in California's Central Coast region, made famous by the 2004 film Sideways. The show will follow five wannabe winemakers through all aspects of the winemaking process.

'In each half-hour episode, the five candidates must endure backbreaking work, long hours and the joys and heartaches of making the world's most storied beverage,' said the producers.

The winner will see his or her wine, with its own personalised label, released on the market.

Shooting is sheduled to begin in December this year and reports say the programme will be aired in Spring 2006. How the producers will fit a harvest, which normally occurs in late summer, into the filming has not been revealed.

The reality show will be produced by PBS (Public Broadcasting Service); prospective candidates to feature on the series are being invited to write an essay on wine – to be reveiwed by a panel of wine experts – as well as a screen tests and castings.
