Google founders serve Margaux, Krug

January 31, 2006
By Oliver Styles, and agencies

Château Margaux and Krug Champagne were served to the world's business and political elite at a party hosted by the founders of Google last weekend.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of the omnipresent internet search engine, hosted the late-night party which saw hundreds of guests, including Israeli vice premier Shimon Peres, served magnums of 1990 Krug.

First-growth Bordeaux Château Margaux 1979 and second-growth Château Gruaud Larose 1989 were also served at the bash held in the Kirchner art gallery in the Swiss alpine town of Davos.

On learning of the extensive guest list, one attendee reportedly told the hosts, 'you can't just serve this stuff to anybody off the street'.

The wines were paired with Belon oysters and Spanish Bellota ham.

The guests were all participants of the World Economic Forum, held every year at Davos.

The event sees the world's political, industrial and intellectual elite meet to discuss prevalent world issues. Over a three-day weekend, seminars broached varied subjects from Chinese business development to sex therapy.

The forum's detractors, which include anti-globalisation organisations, say the event is essentially a glorified business meeting.
