Chateau Guiraud to be sold

May 8, 2006
Jane Anson

Chateau Guiraud, one of Sauternes' top estates, is in the process of being sold, decanter.com has learned.

The 128ha (hectare) estate, next door to the famous Chateau Yquem, is regularly cited as being one of the leading producers of Sauternes, the highly-prized sweet white wine from Bordeaux.

Guiraud, a premier cru chateau, has been in the hands of the Narby family since 1981. The family have entirely renovated the chateau building, installed a new winery with stainless steel tanks and new oak barrels. They have also extensively replanted the vineyard.

Xavier Planty has managed the estate since 1988 although it is not yet known if he will continue under the new owners.

Well-placed sources in Bordeaux told decanter.com that contracts are about to be signed on the chateau for an undisclosed sum. An announcement will be made in the next few weeks.
