The bar is located in No. 9 Garden, an upmarket Mediterranean restaurant in central Guangzhou.
Opened on 11 March, it was the idea of Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s (BPDR - Mouton Cadet's owner) partner and importer, Torres China.
The bar forms a separate part of the restaurant, and is split into three sections, with a bistro-style bar, and private room serving the range of BPDR and Domaines Barons de Rothschild wines, including Chateau d’Armailhac, Chateau Clerc Milon and Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
BDPR president Xavier de Eizaguirre told decanter.com if the concept proved a success they would open other bars across China.
‘Currently we sell around 50,000 cases of Mouton Cadet in China, a small part of our overall sales of 1m cases, but it is a market that we are increasingly focusing on.
‘We have carefully controlled distribution because of the fraudulent bottles that have circulated, but this investment underlines how important the Chinese market is to us.'
Visits to the bar will be offered during Vinexpo Hong Kong later this month: the city of Guangzhou is a two-hour train journey from Hong Kong.
