Champagne: 'Lightweight bottle used by almost all houses within two years'
- Wednesday 17 March 2010
The new 75cl bottles weigh 835g, compared with today’s standard of 900g (a 7.2% reduction).
The CIVC claims that they are strong enough to withstand the pressure of the Champagne inside the bottle, and that they cost the same as the traditional model.
Laurent Panigaï, the CIVC’s head of viticulture, told decanter.com: ‘More than 95% [of Champagne] will be bottled with this new standard within one to two years.
‘Many winemakers have been asking for this new bottle.’
Use of the new bottles will not be mandatory, according to the CIVC.
