Margaret Duckhorn of Duckhorn Vineyards has been elected chair of the Wine Institute.

Duckhorn was elected for the fiscal year 2008-9 at the Institute’s 74th annual meeting in Santa Barbara.

The Wine Institute is the San Francisco-based lobbying and advocacy group for the California wine industry. It represents some 1,100 wineries in California which it says account for 95% of the state’s production and 85% of US production.

The Institute, under president and CEO Bobby Koch, also has offices in Sacramento and Washington DC.

Margaret Duckhorn is one of the pioneers of Napa wine, founding the eponymous winery in the mid-1970s and producing the first vintage of 800 cases each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in 1978. She is a former president of Napa Valley Vintners Association.

Duckhorn Wine Co now includes Duckhorn Vineyards, Paraduxx, and Goldeneye in Anderson Valley.
