Robbie Millar Scholarship

A new scholarship for young chefs has been launched in memory of the late Robbie Millar, the celebrated Northern Irish chef who died in 2005.

The newly launched Robbie Millar Scholarship offers ambitious chefs less than 23 years old the chance to study under Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray at the River Café, with chef Richard Corrigan, and at Château Vignelaure in Provence.

The 2007 Young Chef Of The Year Competition was set up in memory of Robbie Millar, who set up Shanks restaurant in County Down with his wife Shirley in 1994.

Millar was killed aged 38 in a car accident in County Down, Northern Ireland in August 2005. The death of such a talented and popular chef at so young an age sent shock waves through the British and Irish restaurant industries.

The competition is supported by a host of top names in the restaurant and wine industries including Paul Rankin, Rogers and Gray, Shaun Hill and Sir Terence Conran.

Entrants, who must study or work in some capacity within the catering industry, are required to prepare a three-course meal from a set list of ingredients and choose suitable wines to accompany them.

Eight finalists will then be invited to cook for the judges on 27 March 2007.
