First organic wine shop opens in the Lakes

Britain's first all-organic wine retailer opened its doors in the Lake District last Friday, just in time for the summer season.

Organico, located on Old Lake Road in Ambleside, Cumbria, boasts a wine portfolio of more than 120 labels, mainly from Italy, and largely unavailable in English supermarket chains.

Indeed, many producers only agree to supply the shop because they are small and independent, owner Peter Jackson told decanter.com.

‘Many of our producers, whom we normally visit in their vineyards, ask us if their wine would end up on the shelves of large grocery stores. When we explain we are just one shop in a corner of England, only then do they agree to supply us.’

Organico has been operating for nearly three months. But on Friday, a week before the Lake District – an area of outstanding natural beauty in the north of England – gets its biggest tourist surge, Jackson decided to throw a launch party.

The event catered to the Lake District elite and also saw riders on horseback stopping by to grab a glass of organic Prosecco before trotting off.

The wines at Organico are mainly in the under £10 range, with some offerings, such as Champagne and the 1999 Loacker-Corte Pavone Brunello di Montalcino, over £20.
