Wine pros go for the Full Monty
- Monday 11 April 2005
Members of wine lobbying group Women of Wine have recruited male colleagues, including Masters of Wine, journalists and merchants, to strip off at a fundraising evening. All proceeds will go to the Prostate Cancer Charity.
Decanter’s consultant editor Steven Spurrier will host the event – fully clothed – at the Bleeding Heart Restaurant’s Crypt in Holburn Circus, London on 30 June.
The troupe of strippers – who will treat a women-only audience to a short, and hopefully titillating, dance – includes Tim Atkin MW, the Observer’s wine critic, Michael Palji MW and Richard Milsom from Charles Taylor Wines.
While the main attraction – dubbed a ‘full Monty’ after the hit 1997 film – is open only to women, the after-show party will be open to all.
Prostate Cancer kills 10,000 men a year in the UK, around one man an hour, but it still has a relatively low profile. WOW intends to raise both awareness and money for the Prostate Cancer Charity. Tickets are priced £27.50 for women and £20 for the party following the performance.
The striptease, and subsequent party, will form a pre-race social event for the five strippers and five WOW ladies set to run the Medoc Marathon on 10 September.
The runners – sponsored by Chateau Lynch Bages – also aim to raise money for the charity.
‘I am very excited about organising this event for the charity – and seeing these men strip off,’ event organiser and Decanter Tastings Manager Christelle Guibert said. ‘It’s a case of men using their assets to save other men’s assets.’
