Applications are being invited for the Geoffrey Roberts Award, which offers a £3,000 (over US$5,500) travel bursary to an individual with great potential in the gastronomic world.

The 2005 Geoffrey Roberts Award is open to anyone who can convince the judges that the bursary will in some way be spent to improve the world of food or wine.

The prize has been awarded every year since 1996. Past bursaries have been used for research into eastern European grape varieties and to promote the ecological processing of vinicultural waste in Australia.

Last year’s winner, Shalva Khetsuriani from Georgia, used his bursary to visit 20 leading châteaux in Bordeaux and Burgundy. He then applied some of the techniques he observed to winemaking in his home country.

The prize commemorates New World wine importer Geoffrey Roberts who helped introduce fine, non-European wines to the UK in the 1980s.

The closing date for applications is March 31, 2005, and judging will be held in London in May.
