Royal Opera House hosts inaugural fund-raiser

In a first for the wine world, London’s Royal Opera House and Decanter will host a dinner combining great wine, opera and a charity auction.

The gala dinner, held in conjunction with Decanter magazine and Christie’s auction house takes place on 2 March at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.

The dinner’s star-studded wine list includes Dom Pérignon 1996, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Pucelles 2000 from Domaine Leflaive, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars SLV 1996, Château Magdelaine 1990, Château Lafite 1978 en magnum, and Graham’s Vintage Port 1970.

Sir Thomas Allen, Britain’s greatest baritione, will chair the evening. There will be an opera recital and a silent auction of wine and theatre-related lots before dinner.

The dinner will be followed by a live auction conducted by Christie’s David Elswood. The 12 lots – 6 wine-related and 6 theatre-related – include lunch at Château Rieussec in Sauternes followed by dinner at Château Lafite as well as a visit to Château Magdelaine in St Emilion.

Decanter’s publishing director Sarah Kemp said, ‘We are absolutely delighted to be associated with this event. Music and wine are natural partners and I can’t think of a better way of bringing two such great art forms together than an evening like this at such a wonderful venue.’

All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to the Vilar Young Artists’ Programme at the Royal Opera House.
