A tale of two fairs

  • Thursday 12 April 2001

German trade fair ProWein took first blood in the unofficial bi-annual competition for 'the most important European wine trade fair in a non-Vinexpo year' – but was trounced by Vinitaly.

ProWein (March 2000), the annual Düsseldorf event, had a 25 percent increase of standholders to bring the exhibition up to more than 2,500. Exhibitors from countries all over the world.

Exhibitors at Verona's Vinitaly – which came just after ProWein (March - April 2000) were nervous that there would be fewer German-language visitors this year, because of the proximity of ProWein. But in fact a record attendance of more than 3,000 exhibitors took it into pole position.

But in the end both shindigs take second place to the senior wine fair, universally acknowledged to be Vinexpo in Bordeaux: next edition June 2001.
