Chosen for their specialist knowledge in each area are Tim Atkin MW who will head up the South America panel, Poh Tiong Ch'ng covering the Middle East, Far East & Asia, Jim Budd for the Loire and Angela Muir MW for Central & Eastern Europe.
Awards organiser Clare Seel said, 'The integrity of the awards is dependent on the quality of the tasters. It is essential that all the judges have a thorough understanding and specialist knowledge of the wines they are tasting. We're confident we have brought in the best palates possible.'
Each of the 19 regional chairmen with head a panel of judges, each chosen for their experience and knowledge.
Having gained much experience in judging in international wine competitions, Tim Atkin MW said, 'As regional chairman for South America I am happy to be involved with the awards for the quality of the other judges, the fact that judging panels are small and therefore focused on what they are doing.'
Poh Tiong Ch'ng is publisher of The Wine Review, South-east Asia's oldest wine magazine, and founder of the Lianhe Zaobao Wine Review Annual Wine Challenge, Singapore's first, independent wine competitio. He will not only bring vast wine knowledge but also expertise and experience when it comes to judging at an international level.
He said, 'I feel very privileged to be involved with the Decanter World Wine Awards particularly since they are chaired by Steven Spurrier. I like very much the fact the wines will be considered from both a varietal and a regional point of view. When a wine is blessed with a provenance, we should be able to detect characteristics and nuances peculiar to that place.'
As regional chairman for the Loire, Jim Budd said, 'I am delighted to have been asked to be a regional judge for the Loire for Decanter's new wine awards, which I am sure will highlight the diversity of wines from the region and the good value that many offer.'
Angela Muir MW will bring the list of Masters of Wine on board to six.
The entry period for the Decanter World Wine Awards is from October 2003 to March 2004. Judging will take place in Spring 2004, and the results will be published in Autumn 2004.
