Canadian wines and fortifieds have both shone at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards.

With just 22 days to go until the coveted International trophies are announced, decanter.com can reveal a massive four out of five entries from Port and Madeira achieved a bronze, silver or gold medal.

In total, 72% of the Sherries tasted won a medal while Canada was a surprise star with three out of four wines gaining an award.

In contrast, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley performed disappointingly in the Awards, with just one-quarter of their wines achieving a medal.

Only 148 (26%) Bordeaux entries could manage an award with just four golds. In the Loire, 38 wines made it onto medals table but there were no golds.

Jim Budd, chair of the Loire panel at the Awards, told decanter.com, 'Obviously we were disappointed that the wines did not show bettter. There were very few wines that really sang.

'In previous years the golds have tended to come from the sweet wines. Unfortunately this year the sweet wine entries were weak,' he added.

Only 1.9% of the 10,983 entries won a prestigious gold medal, with Australia leading the medals table with 33 golds.

Full results of the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards, including International trophies, will go live on decanter.com at 10pm on 1 September.
