Steven Spurrier honoured by Italian Sommelier Association

Steven Spurrier, Decanter’s consultant editor, has been made an honorary sommelier of the Italian Sommelier Association.

The award – Sommelier Ad Honorem – was presented at the Ritz Hotel in London in September by Terenzio Medri, president of the Association.

Spurrier was presented with a tastevin alongside the three sommeliers who were awarded the Association’s Young Ambassadors of Italian wine prize.

These were Alessandra Celio, senior assistant restaurant manager at Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley Hotel in London, Filippo Lanciotti, head sommelier at the Restaurant Anita in Cupra Marittima in central Italy, and Carlo Ferrigno, food and beverage manager at the NH Hotel du Grand Sablon, Brussells.

A spokesperson for Villa Sandi said Sommelier Ad Honorem had been awarded in the past to ‘persons from the wine press, cinema, television, economics, or to famous wine producers… due to extraordinary achievements in their jobs – as was the case with Mr Spurrier.’

Spurrier said he was ‘greatly honoured’ to have been chosen for the award.
