Seghesio sold to Crimson Wine Group

Family-owned Zinfandel specialist Seghesio Family Vineyards has been bought by Crimson Wine Group for an undisclosed sum.

The Seghesio family will remain closely involved in the running of the Sonoma estate, with third generation member Peter Seghesio taking on the role of winegrower, and Ted Seghesio staying on as winemaker.

‘We wanted to keep the heart and soul of the winery intact with the family, who will continue to inform the vision and create its success,’ said Crimson Wine Group CEO Erle Martin.

The Seghesios had been producers of cheaper Zinfandels and table wines until the family repositioned in the 1990s, cutting yields and improving quality to tap into the burgeoning premium wine boom in the US.

The deal cements Crimson’s position as an owner of estates dedicated to particular varietals, including Oregon Pinot Noir specialist Archery Summit, Burgundian-themed Chamisal Vineyards in California’s Edna Valley, and Pine Ridge Vineyards, the Cabernet Sauvignon-focused winery in Stag’s Leap District.
