Sotheby's continues 'Great American Collector' sale
- Thursday 1 September 2011
The sale is the eighth part of the long-running Classic Cellar of a Great American Collector series, billed by Sotheby’s as ‘the greatest single-owner wine collection’ in its history.
The first part of the sale took place in New York in March 2009, thereafter moving to Hong Kong. The series so far has taken US$39.1m.
Highlights of the auction on 1 October in Hong Kong’s Convention Center include three Imperials of Chateau Lafite 2000 with an estimate of US$15,000-20,000, eight cases of Chateau Petrus 1995, estimated at US$16,000-20,000 each, and two Imperials of Chateau Cheval Blanc 1990 (US$8,000-11,000).
Also in the sale are four Imperials of Chateau Latour 1996 (US$7,000-10,000), eight Jeroboams of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 2000 (US$9,000-12,000), Imperials of Chateau Margaux (US$6,000-9,000) and Jeroboams of Chateau Haut-Brion 1989 (US$8,000-12,000).
Serena Sutcliffe MW, head of Sotheby’s international wine department, said, ‘This is an array of wines of vinous perfection in pristine appearance of superb intrinsic quality.’

A look at wine auction prices vs. open market prices with buyer’s premiums and other factors (transport, taxes applicable) taken into account, results show auction buyers in Asia pay a premium over London secondary market.
Sales figures from the first quarter of 2011 show winning bidders paid a premium of 9% at Acker, 8% at Sotheby’s Lloyd Webber and a full 22% at Sotheby’s Winebank over the Liv-ex Mid Price.
So, does this mean that selling at auction in HK will net you the best price?
According to Liv-ex, once the buyer’s premium is removed (22% Acker, 25% Sotheby’s HK) to show final hammer prices, the ‘seller actually achieved around 10% less than the Liv-ex Mid Price at both the Acker and Lloyd Webber sales…and a par score at the Bordeaux Winebank sale’.
It is highly likely, then, that whereas such auctions may continue to be the preserve of some first growths and help to build their brand in Asia, overall the open market remains the most competitive place to buy, or sell.

"Great American Collector"
This is a sales pitch to Asian. Sotheby's is only assembling multiple collectors under a common theme. They are the great American Collector..offering cash for perfect bottles...and Commissioning the Balance.
Cheers!
