Tesco wine chief Dan Jago to return

Dan Jago, the head of wine, beer and spirits at Tesco who was suspended alongside several other directors pending an internal investigation, is set to return to active duty at the retailer next month.

Dan Jago is to be re-instated at Tesco in March, following the conclusion of an investigation into the reporting of profit at the multiple retailer. His official title will be ‘category director – group wine’.

He was one of several directors asked to temporarily ‘step aside’ in October last year, after the supermarket chain was forced to announce that it had over-stated profit by £250m.

Ex-Royal Navy man Jago has been with Tesco since 2006, having previously been joint managing director at wine supplier Bibendum.

Tesco’s profit warning last year prompted the UK’s Serious Fraud Office to launch a criminal investigation into Tesco’s accounting practices. The country’s Grocery Code Adjudicator, Christine Tacon, has also said she will scrutinise the firm’s supply chain practices associated with the profit over-statement.

Jago’s return to Tesco comes amid signs of increased competition in the wine retail sector. Established supermarket chains have come under pressure from discount chains Aldi and Lidl launching new wine ranges.

Last week, retailer Majestic Wine parted ways with its chief executive, Steve Lewis, following a challenging Christmas period.
