Countdown to Shanghai: Richard Geoffroy of Dom Pérignon

Decanter talks exclusively to Richard Geoffroy, Chef de Cave at Dom Pérignon, about his involvement in the first Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter, which takes place at The Ritz Carlton in Shanghai on Saturday 29th November.

How much are you looking forward to the Shanghai encounter next month?
I’m very much looking forward to it! I love Shanghai. Shanghai is a cosmopolitan, amazingly fast developing city: so alive and vibrant, re-energizing, inspiring, addictive… so Champagne.

And how much are you looking forward to your DP masterclass?
I thoroughly enjoyed my last Decanter Dom Pérignon Masterclass in London two years ago. So I can’t wait to connect with Shanghai’s wine enthusiasts in the same way.

Which vintages will you be showing in the masterclass?
The three faces of Dom Pérignon: 2004, Rosé 2003 and the new P2 1998.

What is the Shanghai market like for Dom Pérignon?
Shanghai is a sophisticated wine city and the aspiration for Dom Pérignon keeps growing.

How long have you been going to Shanghai?
I first went to Shanghai in 2000 for the official introduction of Dom Pérignon to China and I have been privileged enough to go on regular visits ever since.

What is your most memorable Dom Pérignon experience there?
It has to be the Dom Pérignon Power of Creation performance by pianist Lang Lang, composer Alexandre Desplats and visual artist Han Lixun: an interpretation of three Dom Pérignon vintages at Union Church in 2012.

As a gourmet, how do you rate Shanghai for its food offering?
Shanghai is definitely a great food city with an outstanding variety of cuisines. I particularly enjoy the delicate local fish and shellfish from the lakes and the rivers inland. And then a special mention goes to my dear friend Paul Pairet’s Ultra Violet: the most global and playful food experience I ever went through.

Richard Geoffroy will be presenting a Dom Pérignon masterclass at the Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter on Saturday 29th of November.
