Saussignac, Clos d'Yvigne 1999

starstarstarstarstar
70% Semillion, 30% Muscadelle matured in old oak, now amber gold, with concentrated orange peel and burnt apple flavours, almost caramelised richness with crackling acidity, a great sweet wine.
£19.20 (50cl) J&B

Feller-Artinger, Beerenauslese, Rust, Burgenland 2004

starstarstarstarstar
A superbly botrytised Chardonnay-Welschriesling blend, fully rich, very sweet with lingering complexity. Good with berry fruits and summer pudding.
£9.99 (37.5cl) Wai

Coteaux Varois, Chateau Miraval 2004

starstarstarstarstar
A 100% Rolle (Viognier) from Provence, with an aroma of wild violets and a mineral finish taht hides its 14% natural ripeness.
£9.99 Swg, WCh, WEt

Te Mata Estate, Woodthorpe Viognier, Hawkes Bay 2005

starstarstarstarstar
Really lovely, white peach stone fruit; barrel ageing and lees-stirring bring added complexity without losing acidity.
£12.99 Sec

Vermentino della Maremma Toscana, Pagliatura, Fattoira di Magliano 2005

starstarstarstarstar
A pure Vermentino from Tuscany's Maremma, beautifully scented with very precise fruit and lovely persistence.
£11.95 L&S

Condrieu, E Guigal 2004

starstarstarstarstar
White peach and dried apricots, exotic yet dry finish.
£23.99 Wai

Cloudy Bay, Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough 2003

starstarstarstarstar
A 100% wild yeast, barrel-fermented, 100% malolactic and 18 months in old oak take on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. A resounding success, with a structure that will benefit from further age.
£18.49 HvN, Maj, Sel, Wmb

Sancerre, Cuvee Maxime, Domaine Vincent Delaporte, Vincent et Jean-Yves Delaporte 2005

starstarstarstarstar
The Delaporte vines are all on the chalky slopes of Chavignol and this wine spends a brief time in barrel, which gives roundness but no oak flavour. Aromatic, mineral and complex, more Sancerre than Sauvigon by a long chalk.
£15.95 L&S

Shaw and Smith, Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills 2005

starstarstarstarstar
Bottled in a clear Bordeaux bottle under Stelvin; restrained citrussy fruit and terrific purity and zip, leading easily to a second bottle.
£9.99 Lib

Chateau Bonnet, Entre-Deux-Mers 2005

starstarstarstarstar
70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon. Crispness dominating now but florality will come.
£6 (Stelvin) Sai

Craggy Range Winery, Rapaura Road Riesling, Marlborough 2004

starstarstarstarstar
One of the finest Rieslings from a tasting of 50 wines; fine, minerally/petrolly nose, limey, citrus, orange peel flavours, vibrant dry finish.
£13.99 (Stelvin) LLt

Brightwater, Pinot Gris, Nelson 2005

starstarstarstarstar
White peaches and fresh pear aromas, spicily soft, full fruit with good length and acidity, a charming example.
£13.99 (Stelvin) RdW

Collio Tocai Friulano, Schiopetto 2004

starstarstarstarstar
An explosion of quince, apricot, lemon, lime and marmalade on the nose, fresh and tight, with a lemony, minerally fruit and crisp finish, this is one of the purest Tocais available.
£14.95 L&S

Vinoptima, Ormond Estate Gewurztraminer, Gisborne 2004

starstarstarstarstar
Nick Nobilo's answer to Alsace; spicy, grapey, ripe, complex and carries its alcohol well.
£21.99 Berkmann Wine Cellars, London N7 (020 7609 4711)

Domaine Marcel Deiss, Burg, Bergheim 2002

starstarstarstarstar
Jean-Michel Deiss took on Alsace authorities to win the right to plant mixed grapes in his grand cru vineyards, to create a wine that represents the cru rather than the varietal. Dominated by Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, the clay Bergheim soils have produced a wine of great richness and depth with an underlying minerality. A unique wine.
£29.50 L&S

Cullen, Semillon-Sauvignon, Margaret River 2003

starstarstarstarstar
A 52% Semillion-48% Sauvignon Blanc blend, this has white flowers and suave spiciness and is gaining complexity with no loss of freshness. Expensive compared to Bordeaux though.
£14.75 (Stelvin) Lib

Chateau Thieuley Blanc, Bordeaux 2005

starstarstarstarstar
One of the great survivors of the appellation, maintained and rejuvenated by sisters Marie and Sylvie Courselle. 15% Sauvignon Gris in the Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend pushes the fruit to a lovely, spicy level.
£7.50 (Stelvin) Mnt

A'Beckett's, Seyval, Wiltshire 2005

starstarstarstarstar
This French hybrid is most suitable for cool climates, where it produces a simple, quaffing wine, refreshingly light at 11.5% alcohol.
£7 RoW, Tho, WhF

A'Beckett's, Estate, Blend, Wiltshire 2005

starstarstarstarstar
A blend of 55% Reichensteiner and 45% Auxerrois. The former is a cross of German-Muller-Thurgau, French Madeleine Angevine and Italian Calabrese, the latter from Alsace. Floral and lively with lovely soft fruit and refreshing acidity.
£8.50 RoW, tho, WhF

Quincy, Domaine des Caves 2005

starstarstarstarstar
Classically fresh, grassy, nettly wine from a revived appellation west of Sancerre.
£9.30 Jer, Lay

Sancerre, Jean & Michel Naudet 2005

starstarstarstarstar
From 12 hectares of Sauvignon grown on the three different soils of the appellation - stony, chalk and flint - resulting in pure varietal aromas, assertive (not aggressive) fruit, vivacious yet suave finish.
£9.79 Wai

Pouilly-Fume, Domaine de Riaux 2005

starstarstarstarstar
Fragrant and pure, always a little more reserved than Sancerre, good now and even better next summer.
£9.95 Jer, Lay

Chateau Saint-Jean-des-Graves, Graves 2005

starstarstarstarstar
A 50-50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from old, hand-picked vines, tank fermented, unoaked but lees-stirred to heighten natural richness, herbaceous, smooth, very sophisticated for the price.
£6.49 (Stelvin) Wai

Johannes Leitz, Rudesheimer Rosengarten, Riesling Kabinett, Rheingau 2004

starstarstarstarstar
This single-vineyard Rheingau comes from sandy-loam soils to give rich, juicy fruit which minimalistic winemaking keeps fresh and pure.
£7.99 (Stelvin) Wai

Ernst Loosen, Dr L Riesling Trocken, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, 2005

starstarstarstarstar
The calling card of Ernie Loosen, the great moderniser/traditionalist of German wine. 9.5% with Mosel fruit, lively, refreshing, perfect.
£5.95 (Stelvin) Sie

Collio Pinot Grigio, Daniele Zof 2005

starstarstarstarstar
Aromas of fresh pears, spicy, fleshy fruit with surprisingly zippy acidity.
£9.95 Jer, Lay

Weingut Loimer, Langeniois Riesling, Kamptal 2004

starstarstarstarstar
Pure, floral, rose cashew aromas, spicy and dry, refreshing acidity.
£12.50 Pol

The Society's Vin d'Alsace

starstarstarstarstar
A blend of several minor grape varieties - Chasselas, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc - to make a fragrant, floral wine with a dry finish.
£5.95 WSo

Pinot Gris, Cuvee Albert, Albert Mann 2004

starstarstarstarstar
Organically managed vineyard, great purity of spicy, rounded, lifted fruit. Bottled under Stelvin.
