The top 10

Recommendations > Ten best wines from Majestic > The top 10

Concha y Toro, Winemaker's Lot, Rucahue Vineyard Lot 21 Carmenere, Puemo Valley 2007

This is a Carmenère that will certainly do no harm to the grape's cause to be taken seriously. The chocolate-dipped fruit is typically concentrated and whistle-clean, but there are underlying mineral aspects which provide a bit of depth, and sprinklings of spice that add vitality at the other end of the scale.
£9.49 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Vacqueyras, Domaine la Garrigue 2006

A wine of fine quality and with a strong Rhône character. The red berry fruit possesses a liquorice twist on the nose, while in the mouth it's well structured and complemented by flavours of truffles, flecks of pepper, and touches of tar.
£9.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Greco di Tufo - Campania, Vesevo 2008

Another strong and refreshing white wine from the Vesevo stable near Mount Vesuvius. There's plenty of crisp, crunchy apples and citrus fruit on show, with slight herbal edges adding a bit of complexity. This is a lovely summer wine that is textured and mineral - very appealing.
£11.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Thelema, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2005

Comfortably residing in the splash-out price category, this is still a refined, delicious and Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet. A highly professional job, it's herbal and leafy, with accompanying notes of green pepper around a cassis core.
£22 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Jackson Estate, Vintage Widow Pinot Noir, Marlborough 2007

Finely balanced and expressive, this is laden with spicy, curranty fruit while possessing a darker, savoury underbelly that gives a bit of grip. Crisp and graceful, if a little young, there's a smattering of violets that brighten up the palate.
£17.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Matetic, Corralillo, Winemaker's Blend, San Antonio Vallley 2006

The nose bursts with lifted, purple fruit. The palate is similarly vibrant, with pure, juicy blackberry and blueberry flavours. Supremely smooth and easy drinking, it's a very good New World red that is neither OTT or overly manufactured and bland - this has character.
£12.49 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Quinta do Crasto, Crasto, Douro 2007

Hugging the right bank of the river Douro, Quinta do Crasto, like many of its neighbours, is home to one of the more stunning vineyard plots in the world. This wine is great value, with bright, lavender-perfumed purple fruit, strong minerality and touches of chocolate. Smooth and supple.
£9.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Shaw and Smith, M3 Vineyard Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills 2007

The 2007 vintage of the M3 is cut from a similar cloth to previous releases - refined, graceful and very finely tuned. There's an interesting marzipan/nutty layer that complements the lush-yet-focused citrus and white fruit, plus the palate is silky, and holds a mineral soul.
£19.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Vire-Clesse, Vieilles Vignes, Christophe Cordier 2008

Viré-Clessé is a relatively new appellation that was formed by the joining of two superior villages that used to come under the Mâcon-Villages umbrella. This offering has a strong mineral presence throughout, bolstered by flowers, herbs and citrus rind notes on the nose. It's fully flavoured but sparky, too, with well-defined fruit and subtle oak playing a nicely judged supporting role.
£12.99 Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200)

Pouilly-Fume, Les Cascadelles, Caves de Pouilly-sur-Loire 2008

A zesty Sauvignon with a nose that boasts notes of garden peas and freshly pulled rhubarb. On the palate it's no less bright and breezy, with a sprinkling of herby flavours complementing the firm mineral layers and crystal clear, green fruit.
