The top 10

Recommendations > Ten best low-ish alcohol wines > The top 10

Mount Horrocks, Cordon Cut Riesling, Clare Valley, Australia 2008

This won't be the cheapest New World sticky you'll come across, but it is worth the outlay. Young but wonderfully rich and unctious, with orange marmalade, honey, lime and sherbert fruit. (ABV 11%)
£17.95 (375ml) Philglass & Swiggot (020 7924 4494)

Domaine de la Chapelle, Les Gravinieres, Chinon 2008

Red wine from France's Loire Valley. Lots of pure aromas with notes of green pepper, red cherry fruit and black pepper. Very firm structure with some savoury characters and supported by high acidity. Green pepper notes on finish. (ABV 12.5%)
£9.50 Le Caviste, Hampshire (01256 771080)

Allegrini, Valpolicella 2008

Cheery, accessible red with a sleek, vibrant, summer fruit coulis nose. It's no less vital in the mouth, with further red fruit enlivening the palate, which has freshness in abundance and leafy touches towards the finish. (ABV 13%)
£9.99 Corks Out, Stockton Heath, 01925 267700

Xavier Benier, XB, Beaujolais-Villages 2007

Made from 108-year-old vines, this red wine is not your typical Beaujolais-Villages - it offers much more complexity and characters, is well-balanced, and has finesse and purity on the finish. Lovely red aromas on the nose. (ABV 12.5%)
£13.95 Le Caviste, Hampshire (01256 771080)

Schlossgut Diel, Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2002

A beautiful gold coloured German Riesling, with pear and apricot aromas and lots of minerality. High acidity with a nice purity on the palate, dried apricot with hint of honey, and a fine minerality on the finish. (ABV 7.5%)
£20.99 The Sampler, Islington (020 7226 8500)

Monte Tondo, Saove Classico 2008

A Soave with plenty going for it. There's a fantastic complexity to this fleshy, almost succulent wine, with orange blossom, sweet white fruit and flecks of pepper all standing out. (ABV 12.5%)
£9.95 Great Western Wines, Somerset (01225 322 800)

Domaine Perraud, Le Loup, Macon-Villages 2008

Highlighting the real quality that can be found in Mâcon today, this white Burgundy would bring affordable charm to any dinner table. Juicy and bright, and blessed with piercing citrus fruit and lifted floral notes, it is also crisp, with a cool minerality and very well defined edges. (ABV 12.5%)
£10.99 Liberty Wines, London SW8 (020 7720 5350)

Torres, Natureo, Spain 2008

De-alcoholised white wine full of flavour and aromas. It has a nice varietal grapey flavour, with floral, peachy and apricot notes. The palate is light, fresh and elegant. (ABV 0.01%)
£5.99 Soho Wine Supply, London (020 7636 8490)

Stefan Winter, Riesling Leckerberg, Rheinhessen 2008

An immediately likeable German Riesling, with a dovetail of stony minerality and honey on the nose, plus aromas of limes and summer meadows. The palate glides over the tongue with poise, showing pronounced minerality, grapefruit and honeyed fruit, and has a lingering finish. (ABV 12%)
£16.50 Swig, London W4 (0800 0272 272)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt, Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer 2007

This Germany Riesling has flavours of marmalade, minerals and petrol, and a juicy, citrus core. Succulent lemon, squeeze of lime and a touch of lees too. (ABV 8%)
£11.99 Laithwaites (0870 444 8383)
