Gratien & Meyer, The Society's Saumur Rosé Brut, Saumur

Tasted by: Christelle Guibert
Drinking Window: 2016 - 2018
Gratien Meyer is an institution in Saumur. Founded in 1864, the cellar was carved out of ancient tuffeau stone overlooking the Loire River. The 5km of labyrinthine underground galleries provide the ideal conditions for producing and storing their sparkling wines. The quality has improved a lot, and they are now easily competition for the other sparklers around the world. Made using the méthode traditionelle, this is predominantly Cabernet Franc blended with the local Grolleau and aged for a year on its lees. Pretty raspberry and red cherry flavours have a good attack and nice roundness. This is a wonderful aperitif wine.
