La Rioja Alta, Viña Arana, Rioja Reserva 2008
Wonderfully ripe and pretty on the nose, with blueberry compote and wild strawberry aromas, while the American oak really lifts this wine with sweet coconut notes. Layered and structured on the palate, this is a very attractive Rioja, delivering sweet fruit that balances perfectly with the dusty and smoky tannins, and a long finish of currants and leathery spice.

From one of the most traditional bodegas in Rioja comes this extremely good-value eight-year-old reserva. It’s a textbook example, with notes of sweet, ripe strawberry fruit and coconut perfume from the American oak. The palate is smooth and complex with many layers of flavour on offer, underlined by savoury leather notes, sweet spice and lots of smokey characters.
