Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru Monopole 2014
The 2014 Romanée-Conti is fabulous, bursting from the glass with a pure and projected bouquet of strawberry, raspberry, spice and peony. On the palate, the wine is very intense, with great mid-palate depth and persistence and a lovely core of cool fruit underpinned by juicy, lingering acidity and fine, ripe tannins. While the Romanée-Conti doesn’t possess the same power and structural amplitude as La Tâche and Richebourg, it is more penetrating and harmonious.
Romanée-Conti is famously a wine that only reveals all its qualities in the fullness of time, and La Tâche is often more youthfully impressive; but in 2014 Romanée-Conti is in the lead right out of the gate. Harvested the morning of 19 September.
Taster: William Kelley
Fabulous panoply of aromas even at this young age: raspberry, sweet spice and floral notes but also hints of forest floor. The texture is pure silk and the finish is deliciously savoury. The epitome of elegance. (97/100pts)
Taster: Gérard Basset OBE MW MS (en primeur).
