Domaine Michelas-St. Jemms, Sainte Epine, Saint Joseph, Rhône, 2010

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Spicy floral nose, violets, cherries, blueberries. Medium-bodied, fresh, and lifted, has poise and vigour thanks to lively acidity. This doesn’t have much flesh or weight but the balance is impeccable and it should age well, though it’s accessible now. Has charm and length, with light tannins on the finish.

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Deep colour and attractive nose of cassis, loganberry and laurel. Palate is poised with finely etched tannins a good mid-palate weight of fruit and balancing acidity. Good levels of concentration and a harmonious finish complete the very satisfactory picture.Slightly drying at the back; this may well reward the patient.

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Reductive nose, needs decanting to dislodge an air of fruit gum. Has a sealed, baked layer of black fruit, and a roasted, meaty aspect. Country style wine here – no pretence to be modern and sleek: it is wide, the berry fruit is vigorous, unbridled. Ends on the up, with some fire, and is long. Good and full, honest wine from the hills and valleys. Marks for authenticity.
