Free Run Wines, Les Calades, Saint Joseph, Rhône, 2010

Producer:

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Lively nose, black cherries, Indian spices, and meaty without being too gamey. Fresh attack, sleek and concentrated, with fine acidity that gives it elegance. The tannins are very discreet and this doesn’t seem particularly structured but overall it’s poised and limpid. Good length.

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Restrained but rather dignified nose; old-style Syrah. Then a palate which surprises with the elegance and sweetness of the fruit, all pleasingly enveloped in a fairly traditional style. Linear and poised, this is the child of a good grower in a very good vintage.

John Livingstone-Learmonth

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

The nose mingles baked raspberry tart, brioche, has a lurking strength underneath, is certainly ripe, and will evolve well. The palate is still making its way, not yet out in the open. The fruit reaches the finish in a cool, restrained way. Discreet strength and not an easy wine to read just now. From 2014, decanting also a help. The aftertaste is compact, round, has toffee-style matter.
