Pole vault
Catena Alta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina 2008
You need a head for heights, soaring imagination and real daring to scale the Andes at over 1,000m above sea level. But altitude is what this wine is all about: a vaulting, muscular red whose tobacco spice, sun-dried tomato and ripe blackcurrant aromas leap towards a juicy, dense plum and cassis richness backed up by a cushioning fall of vanilla oak spice and fine tannins. A big, powerful red that cries out for meat. 17pts/20 (90/100)
