DWWA 2013 Portugal Judging Panel
Beatriz Machado studied for an MSc in Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, California, while being the Teaching Assistant for three professors across different aspects of wine technology. She also received Wine Spectator’s Non-Resident Tuition Grant, and following her studies, Beatriz returned to her native Portugal where she taught courses on sensory analysis of wines and panel performance evaluation in the Douro and the Alentejo. Beatriz’ passion for wines and her belief that quality Portuguese wines need to be “tasted” by global consumers led her to accepting the role of Wine Director for the five star The Yeatman Hotel, Portugal’s first position of this nature. Since June 2010, Beatriz has selected and now oversees a 25,000-bottle wine cellar, which stocks the world’s most comprehensive collection of Portuguese table wines and Ports. Under her guidance, The Yeatman won the award for Best Wine List, from the Revista de Vinhos in 2011, and the “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator in 2012.
