This year’s annual Grands Crus Classés diner, held for the international press during Vinexpo, was held at the First Growth property Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
Over 600 people including wine luminaries, journalists and selected guests, clutching gold embossed invites, were greeted by the sight of the Chateau’s newly completed chai, as well as a temporary structure covered in mirrored glass, standing opposite, which had been purpose-built for the week's entertainment.
On arrival guests were given a tour of the new chai plus an exclusive viewing of the new art gallery built to permanently house the travelling exhibition ‘Mouton Rothschild: Paintings for the Labels’ – the first time all of the original artworks commissioned for the bottle lables has been on display at the estate.
A Champagne and canapé reception followed serving Champagne Barons des Rothschild plus a selection of Sauternes from 2009 as well as foie gras and fig chutney on raisin and pistachio crispbreads and thinly-sliced veal on crackers.
Inside the large dining room, images of bottles, labels and chateaus were projected onto the four walls while tables were decorated with cloths and napkins covered in Chateau Mouton bottle labels and colourful flower centre-pieces.
A series of speeches from Philippe Castéja, president of the Conseil des Grands Cru Classées, Alain Juppé, Mayor of Bordeaux, and Philippe Dhalluin, technical director at Chateau Mouton, welcomed the room full of international wine journalists and proprietors from many of the 1855 Classified estates.
Baroness Philippine also addressed the room garnering the affections of the crowd and returned to her seat to a standing ovation.
Guests then enjoyed a five course meal and a selection of Medoc wines ranging from 2005 – 1975.
The food included a pike soufflé, navarin of lamb and vegetables, cheese and biscuits and a cherry tart and sorbet, accompanied by Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1975 served from imperial and Chateau Coutet 1989.
An impressive fireworks display concluded the evening’s festivities.
