BILBAO-RIOJA ANNOUNCES THE 2010 'BEST OF' WINERY TOURISM AWARD WINNERS


The 'Best Of' Winery Tourism award winners for 2010 were announced at a ceremony held on October 1 in the Armory of the historic Citadelle in Pamplona, Spain.

The award winners were selected by a jury of representatives from the tourism departments and Chambers of Commerce of La Rioja, Álava, Navarra and Bilbao.

The prize for Accommodation was awarded to the Hotel Hospedería Villa de Ábalos for its efforts to make guests feel a part of the grapegrowing and winemaking experience.

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España received the award for Architecture, Parks and Gardens for its buildings and cellars, most of which were built in the 19th century, notably an ageing cellar built by Gustave Eiffel.

The award for Art and Culture was given to Finca Valpiedra for its private art collection as well as its facilities for holding exhibitions and other cultural events.

Bodegas Muga was the award winner in the category of Innovative Experiences and Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices. Muga was one of the first wineries in Rioja to open its cellars to tourists and prides itself on providing visitors with a quality learning experience.

The 'Best Of' award for a wine tourism restaurant was given to Remenetxe in Bilbao for its international wine list and didactic approach to teaching wine culture to its customers.

For encouraging the players involved in winery tourism to work together, the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route received the 'Best Of' prize for Winery Tourism Services.

The 'Best Of' wine tourism awards are organized by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, eight global cities (Bilbao/Rioja, Bordeaux, Cape Town, Firenze, Mainz/Rheinhessen, Mendoza, Porto and SanFrancisco/Napa Valley) which share a key economic and cultural asset – their internationally renowned wine regions. The purpose of the network is to bring them together to share global wine, business and tourism experiences.
