Wine and Health

Wine, as we all know, is good for us – or is it? Barely a week goes by without new scientific research claiming that wine can either prevent or reduce the severity of numerous illnesses and ailments.

The link between wine and health has always been a major topic for the media. An episode of 60 Minutes broadcast in the United States in the early 1990s about the French Paradox did wonders for the US wine industry, with millions of Americans delighted to hear that all they had to do to protect their heart was to drink more red wine.

And in the UK, a similar effect was caused by Roger Corder's book The Wine Diet, which convinced many that red wine, in particular, does us a lot of good.

But sadly, it is not as simple as that.

In fact, numerous studies have shown that wine consumption can lead to a wide variety of conditions, including dementia, depression, and cancer.

Of course, everyone knows that excessive alcohol consumption can be fatal, and while we would never seek to trivialise this important research – or, for that matter, the seriousness of the conditions listed below – such contradictory evidence makes it impossible for those who drink wine within reasonable limits to know what the long-term effects on their health will be.

And until incontrovertible medical proof exists that wine should be approached with extreme caution, we should – and we will – carry on drinking.

Some of the wine at the lower end of the market tastes poisonous to me. Perhaps we should all be getting Grand Cru wines on prescription. The national addiction to alcohol amongst so many other things is remarkable. I can't help but believe that drinking wine is going to be better than drinking tonnes of whisky or lager but maybe not quite so good as real ale. My experiments are continuing! Nick Breeze

It is a refreshing rarity to see a wine-focused publication such as Decanter take a level-headed view of the pros and cons of the wine-and-health issue. The wine industry has been far too ready to dismiss factual commentary from the medical world when it is unpalatable, while eagerly trumpeting any possible evidence that wine might actually offer some health benefits.

There has also been a great readiness to cherry-pick historical references to the healthiness of wine, often from times when water was generally a more dangerous option and when medical knowledge was less developed.

The relief from - possibly cancer-inducing - stress that wine and other forms of alcohol can offer may well have been underestimated. On the other hand, so too has the wide range of allergies, from rashes and coughs to debilitating migraines from which some unfortunate wine drinkers suffer.

The dangers of wine - or any alcohol in excess are undeniable. The benefits of moderate drinking are probable. The challenge lies in defining what represents excess and moderation - for each individual human being. Robert Joseph

The one thing that these 'studies' can't, don't, or won't capture is the difference between individual's predispositions to the endless types of cancer. That which would trigger cancer in one person will make another stronger.

More important, the producers of these 'studies' have a vested interest in producing more 'studies' and that interest can be and is co-opted by biased groups across the spectrum who fund 'studies' in order to have 'science' published to support their position. It is hogwash, and there is now an entire industry whose goal is to produce and distribute valueless hogwash masquerading as science in the form of these 'studies'.

I am afraid that much of the 'evidence' cited in the discussions about the health benefits of wine is not science at all but recycled stories from newspapers. Moreover, associations beween chemicals observed in laboratories do not often translate to tangible health risks/benefits in people.

If you want an informed debate on this subject I suggest you commission one of the many experts in the public health implications of alcohol consumption to write something. In the meantime I shall continue to enjoy (and benefit from) Spurrier's World. Peter G Robinson
