More superb whites on show at Lay & Wheeler.
Etienne Sauzet is on a roll, and I marginally preferred their Puligny Combettes to the Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet: Toasty powerful nose, with considerable intensity; very rich and sumptuous, with weight and power, yet balanced by discreet acidity. 17.5-18. £690-765 IB.
Many of Sylvain Cathiard’s wines are too expensive, but his Chambolle-Musigny ‘Clos de l’Orme’ is more sensibly priced: Subdued and waxy red-fruits nose; medium-bodied but concentrated and lush, with discreet power, elegance, and length. 17.5 £365-400 IB.
Steadily improving reds from Lamarche, such as Vosne-Romanee Suchots: Pure, spicy red-fruits nose; medium-bodied but intense, shows a light touch, yet plenty of extract and excellent balance. 17.5 £550-600 IB.
