In the 1920’s, the young Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta was filled with ambitious dreams of producing a ‘thoroughbred’ of the wine world.  He recognised similarities in climate and soil between Bordeaux and the coastal vineyards of Bolgheri, firmly believing that Cabernet Sauvignon could reach the same exalted heights there as Bordeaux Grand Cru Classes.

For 19 years this revolutionary wine was kept hidden at the Tenuta San Guido estate for the consumption of friends and family only.  Having witnessed the wine blossoming with age, the Marchese finally released the wine commercially in 1968.  In the 1990’s this reputation was consolidated when Sassicaia was awarded its own DOC of Bolgheri Sassicaia.  It is still the only Italian wine from a single estate to have a DOC of its own.

In contrast to other parts of Europe, a number of Italian regions enjoyed excellent conditions in 2013 and excitement over the Sassicaia release has been building over the last two years. In Bolgheri, the longer ripening season was very beneficial for the Cabernets and the harvest conditions, characterised by cool nights and warm days ensured an excellent quality crop. Sassicaia continues its fine run of form with a scintillating 2013: pure, focused and distinctive with no excess and with all of the hallmarks of a Sassicaia that will have a long and distinguished future.

Sassicaia 2013

‘The 2013 vintage is an extraordinarily elegant wine with an expansive bouquet of sweet red cherries and wild berries. On the palate, bright redcurrant fruits mingle with Mediterranean spices, exotic wild herbs and a delicate balsamic note. Beautifully balanced and energetic with a fine mineral structure and magnificent length, this is a classically defined Sassicaia with considerable ageing potential. Anticipated maturity 2025 to 2040.’ James Snoxell, Head of Buying
