Judgement of Paris

JOP topic

The Judgement of Paris (or The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976) was a wine competition pitting unheralded Californian wines against some of the finest wines in France.

It was organised in the French capital on 24th May 1976 by British wine expert Steven Spurrier.

The competition comprised of top-quality Californian Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons tasted alongside white Burgundies and Bordeaux reds.

Suprisingly at the time, a Californina wine ranked top in each category: the 1973 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay and by the 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
