Foie Gras

Foie gras is a food product made from the liver of a duck or goose that has been specially fattened - by French law this is done through the force-feeing of corn known as gavage.

It is a popular delicacy in France, where is it produced and consumed more than any other country in the world.

Controversy surrounds gavage-based foie gras and its production and sale are banned by law in several countries around the world including Germany, Italy, Argentina and Israel as well as in California.

Five European countires produce foie gras including: Belgium, Bulgaria, Spain, France and Hungary.
